Background

The convergence of data science technologies via wearables and personal devices coupled with the data provided by genomics (both individual and global) is revolutionary.

This coupling provides insights into individual and global lifestyles, diets, behaviors and disease burden allowing life insurance industry leaders, for the first time, to:

  • improve the APS process

  • add scientific health risk score and risk factor results to underwriting models

  • attract favorable risk profiles

  • offer variable premium discounts based on continuous monitoring of lifestyle risk factors,

  • increase policy holder touch points for increased cross-selling opportunities.

Policy Holders

Policy holders are exasperated with rising health insurance costs and are acutely aware of their need to modify personal risk factors to live long, healthier lives.

Policy holders want to be evaluated by and rewarded for their healthy lifestyle choices and behaviors instead of once-a-year health risk assessments (which are 60% effective). Digital adopters are motivated to earn discounts, points, and to submit their personal data if it can help lower their premiums based on lifestyle choices and changes.

Policy holders want to understand their genomic risk factors and take action to avoid future risks.

Policy holders want their digital medical records integrated with highly personalized and continuous data from wearables, devices and phones. They want their risk profiles updated continuously with diet, activity and biomarker results so they can stay engaged and learn how they can modify their risk and develop healthy habits.

Industry response

In response, life insurance industry executives are developing strategic partnerships and capabilities to develop variable premium products and discounts based on lifestyle risk. Industry leaders see opportunities to drive brand, touch points, increased engagement and access to a wealth of policy holder consented data.

Life industry leaders already understand the crucial importance of health and wellbeing to their businesses and policy holders, but there is more they can do to extend their brands, product cross-sales, collection of premium, and policy holder loyalty.
